Hello!
We are so PROUD to announce the birth of our beautiful baby girl, Saira Jean Wooden. Saira was born on 01/12/12 at 6:44pm, and she weighed 8lbs 5.9 oz. Most important information of all- she's healthy! She has ten toes and fingers, and they are absolutely edible!
Birth Story: Sasha had her labor induced on Wednesday evening, and Saira made her debut 22 hours later! All that waiting and pushing was worth it! We stayed two days in the hospital to ensure that mom and baby are healthy. We are recovering well at home, and getting to know each other as a family. Saira is such a blessing! Special thank yous to the following people who were an active part of the delivery: Ma/Mavi (mom), Nikki (friend), Gauri (sister), Vinod Uncle and Amrit Aunty (aunt and uncle), and all other loved who supported us via text, Skype, Facetime etc (especially our family in Chicago).
Name Story: Choosing a name is a big decision! We had agreed on three things:
- not to name the baby until she was born so that we could get to see her energy, aura, and personality, then give her a chosen name.
- the baby will have an Indian/Hindi/Sanskrit first name. Growing up in the "melting pot" of America, it is so easy to lose a sense of your heritage- especially when we do not see Indians in mainstream society- media, literature, music, news, politics. Sometimes your name is your vehicle that identifies who you are throughout your life, and we wanted her to have some link to her Indian heritage. Besides, Indian names are beautiful!
- her middle name will be Jean. Jean is the middle name of both of Tony's grandmothers, and means God is Gracious. His maternal grandmother, Mary Jean, was there for Tony's birth and she died shortly afterwards. His paternal grandmother, Doris Jean, raised Tony to be the amazing and kind person that he is today and we wanted to honor her. Thank you, Granny!
Saira: sa(i)-ra / cy-rah: has different meanings in different languages:
Sai: in Sanskrit means essence and blessing
Saira: in Arabic means traveller, or the journey of a bird
Saira: in Hebrew and many other cultures/languages means princess
Other definitions: rare flower, wanderer, place of diamonds
She's here, and we are so in love with her! Hope you enjoy the pictures... especially the edible toes and fingers.
